How to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Quarantine Style

Cinco looks a little different this year, huh? To be completely honest, I actually almost missed it … but just almost.

Since my boyfriend is Mexican, tequila is essentially a way of life around here. Just ask my friends how many tequila shots they’ve been “forced” to take at our house.

Combine his love of tequila with my love of queso + add in a couple random piñatas that are inevitably always laying around and you could say every day is a Cinco de Mayo celebration at Casa Rodriguez. (I’m not lying about the piñatas, y’all. There are currently 2 in the house right now.)

As part of my 2020 celebration, I’m sharing a few drinks recipes to get you in the Cinco mood:

Classic Margarita:

Ingredients:
– 2 ounces of blanco tequila (Ocho or Espolon)
– 1 ounce fresh lime juice
– 0.5 ounce agave syrup

Preparation Instructions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice.
2. Rim outside of rocks glass with pink Himalayan salt.
3. Strain into the glass filled with ice.

And because I’m obviously a highly trained bartender and not just a borderline margarita-holic thanks to quarantine, here’s how I’ve been making my margs lately …

Margarita de Bex:

Ingredients:
– 3 ounces of Jose Cuervo Gold tequila
– 3 ounces of Jose Cuervo Light Margarita Mix
– ice
– lime wedges

* Bex Life tip: I like to use my boyfriend’s whiskey ice cube tray to make big cubes that don’t melt as quickly, resulting in a less watered day marg on hot days by the pool.

Preparation Instructions:
1. Combine tequila and mix in a shaker filled with ice. Shake.
2. Rim outside of rocks glass with salt.
3. Strain into the glass filled with ice.
4. Garnish with a lime wedge and, I’m going to say it, a straw.

If you’re in the mood to try something a little different this Cinco, give this Paloma recipe from Q Mixers a try and let me know how you like it!

Q Mixers Paloma

Ingredients:
– 1.5 oz Premium Tequila
– 5 oz Q Grapefruit
– Two lime wedges

Preparation Instructions:
1. Fill a highball glass with ice.
2. Pour in the tequila and squeeze in a lime.
3. Pour in the Q Grapefruit.
4. Gently stir and garnish with a lime.

Variations:
– Try mezcal rather than tequila for a smokier drink.
– A tiny splash of agave is a fun way to add some sweetness, if preferred.
